-Maureen Silk, Recording Secretary-
Miles Macdonell Collegiate Alumni Association
60th Anniversary Committee
Monday, September 12th, 2011 – Room 33
In attendance: Jim Smith, Chair, Ron Storozuk, Debb Brethauer, Susan Tighe, Filippo Zimarino, Vivien Laurie, Gordon Fritzsche, Donna Cudmore, Tracy MacDonald, Shelly Makus, Adam Johnston, David Chan, Craig Oliphant, Cindy Feduniw and Maureen Silk as Recording Secretary.
Meeting called to order at 7:00 p.m.
Vivien advised Cindy has volunteered to assist with setting up an order sheet for merchandise to be sold. She had a slide presentation of the items available, which include duffle bags, hoodies, raglan sleeve baseball shirts, short and long sleeve t-shirts, Capri and regular sweat pants, men’s beach shorts, ladies yoga pants, fleece jackets, golf shirts, flannel boxers, pyjama pants and baseball caps.
Cindy showed two logos that she created, one being the letter ‘M’ with the word ‘Buckeyes’ on top, and the other a ‘Buckeyes nut’. Discussion was held that most of the alumni from the 50’s and 60’s would not purchase anything with ‘Buckeyes’ on it as that name was attached to the sports teams. Vivien advised that everyone in the school is now a Buckeye – sports teams, music students, art students, etc.
Cindy will create a third logo using the new stylized compass with ‘M.M.C.’ written across it. This will be a more retro look and should appeal to a lot of older alumni. Craig suggested instead of indicating “60th Anniversary” we could copy what Aeropostale does and have “est. 1952” in small letters. It will cost approximately $100 to have this logo set up and the Alumni Committee offered to cover this cost. Cindy feels at least 20 items would have to be sold with this third logo to make it viable.
A PDF catalogue will be available online, along with an order form and alumni can choose which logo they want on the product. An order can be placed in the Fall of 2011 and again in the Spring of 2012 and Cindy is willing to co-ordinate this.
It was decided that instead of having a lot of extra clothing produced for sale during the event weekend, samples would be shown and alumni could place an order. If they live in the City, they could pick up their order, and if they are out of town, shipping and handling charges would be added. This way the school and Alumni Committee won’t be left with a lot of odd sized products that they can’t sell.
Discussion held regarding the event weekend. Ron circulated a budget summary and Donna circulated a draft agenda. A ticket price of $35.00 for the whole weekend was established. Craig suggested anyone wishing to attend the school events on Saturday only could pay $10.00, which would include food. Vivien feels the school should be open to everyone at no cost. If they want to eat or drink anything, they can pay for it separately.
It was decided that the pancake breakfast would only be available to alumni who purchase a ticket for the whole weekend. Food vendors could be booked to sell the hotdogs, cotton candy and ice cream outside for those who wish to purchase anything. That alleviates the need for a number of volunteers to be cooking and serving food, along with the uncertainty of how many people to cook for. Vivien will check with the School Board to see if vendors can set up on school property or if they have to be on the public sidewalk or street.
Vivien decided that instead of providing wraps and dainties at the tea, a couple of large cakes could be purchased and served.
Craig asked if a Silent Auction would be held and Ron suggested the Wine and Cheese Reception would be a good venue for that.
Vivien suggested the Alumni Committee produce another newsletter indicating the tickets would be available for purchase in January. As two musical shows will be held and the seating capacity is only 225 people per show, it will be stressed that alumni will have to act fast in order to get their tickets. Vivien also advised the unveiling of the Legacy Wall will take place on Saturday, June 23rd at 2:00 p.m. and this should be advertised as it may encourage more alumni to attend.
Ron advised the school will be having their Open House on Thursday, September 15th and members of the Alumni Committee were asked to come and assist with preparing and cooking hotdogs from 3 to 6 p.m.
Gord advised he has some information regarding the registration process and will email it to the Committee.
Meeting adjourned at 9:00 p.m.
NEXT MEETING WILL BE HELD ON MONDAY, OCTOBER 17TH, 2011 AT 7:00 P.M. IN ROOM #33
